The Fillongley Singers

The Fillongley Singers are a small choral society, based in the village of Fillongley, North Warwickshire. They meet every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm for 2 hour rehearsals in the meeting room in St Mary and All Saints Church, Fillongley.

The choir aims to give three concerts each year, the first is held just before Easter and is usually a concert which includes music appropriate to this point in the Christian calendar. This concert often includes a complete work from a famous composer, and past performances have included The Armed Man & Requiem (Karl Jenkins), Requiem (Fauré), Requiem (John Rutter), and Haydn’s Little Organ Mass as well as gospel songs and extracts from Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Solemn Vespers.

The second concert of the year, our summer concert, is usually a more light-hearted selection of music and songs from films, musicals and popular composers. In 2012 we held a very successful ‘Around the British Isles’ concert to celebrate both the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics. Our 2014 concert, ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’, reflected the lighter side of living in wartime, and in subsequent years we have presented concerts of American music, of songs from Disney films, and we have been ‘Back to the 60s’. In 2018 we performed film music spanning many decades.

Our Christmas Concert is usually a mixture of Christmas carols, readings, and festive music in a lighter vein. The choir also regularly sings at Bede Village in Bedworth, usually a reprise of our most recent concert. In 2014, this was a special concert to commemorate 100 years since the start of WW1..

We have also performed to other groups, including the Trefoil Guild and are available to sing at weddings, baptisms, funerals and other family occasions.

The choir’s Musical Director, Patricia Tatum, is a professional soprano and teacher, formerly of Bablake School and Warwick University. Her enthusiasm and professionalism are infectious, and the choir has gone from strength to strength under her leadership. We are accompanied at concerts by Paul Hood, an accomplished organist and pianist, with the occasional addition of other guest instrumental accompanists.

In 2019 the choir will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary with their usual programme of concerts, augmented by a number of additional concerts with other choirs from Earlsdon, Chapelfields and Finham in Coventry, as well as a visiting choir from Ipswich later in the year.

If you would like to join us you will be very welcome – the main requirement is an enthusiasm for and an enjoyment of choral music with a reasonable choral ability, but not necessarily the ability to read music when you join us, and of course, a sense of humour. At this moment in time, we are especially keen to recruit tenors and basses to join the choir.

All concerts will be advertised in Your Call and if you require further details of our programme of concerts or to learn more about joining the choir, please contact our Chairman, Graham Hargreaves on 01676 540766 or our Secretary Suzanne Whiting on 01676 542410.
