The Myton Hospices’ First Abseil Raises Almost £50,000!

The Myton Hospices first ever abseil took place on Saturday 20th October and has raised just under £50,000, with sponsorship still being collected and counted!

The event had been postponed because of high winds, but that did not stop 126 people from taking on the challenge a week later. And they were rewarded with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine! The cheers of friends, family and passers-by – as well as the prospect of a drink afterwards for some – helped even the most nervous to make their way steadily down the side of Coventry Cathedral.

Myton staff were among those taking on the challenge including nurses, doctors and members of the Fundraising and Retail teams, and the charity’s mascot, Monty Bear!

Rebecca Richards, Assistant Events Manager at The Myton Hospices, said, “Our first abseil was an incredible success, especially as we had to postpone the original event. Throughout the day people were sharing their stories and experiences of Myton with us, and how Myton has touched so many people locally – it was heartening to hear about how loved Myton is! We had hoped to raise £35,000 in sponsorship and cannot believe that we have exceeded this by so much! The money will make a huge difference to the people who use our services, and their families. Thank you to everyone who took part or sponsored those taking part – we could not have raised this fantastic amount without you!”

The charity also wants to thank Coventry Cathedral and Eight Point Two for facilitating the abseil, and to the volunteers who helped to put on this amazing challenge!

Due to the huge success and demand for the abseil, Myton is bringing the abseil back on 9th March 2019! If you think you could take on the dizzy heights of Coventry Cathedral, sign up at
