Community News From Around Our Area
What’s Happening at Kenilworth Town Council?
The Council has been busy since its last report, working with various residents in working groups. As a result, over the last few council meetings we have received and accepted a cycling strategy, a climate change roadmap and agreement to upgrade our friendship link with Roccalumera into a full twinning link.
We have also been working with community groups and the District Council events team to organise celebration events for the upcoming 75th anniversary of VE day. Whilst VE day was not quite the end of the Second World War, it was seen by many as the start of the peace and a time to celebrate that servicemen and women began to return home.
In Kenilworth we have plans to mark the event over the bank holiday weekend. We will be holding a best dressed bar competition on Friday 8th May and hope that many bars will “Raise a Glass” at 3pm to toast the many heroes of the war. Later that evening, local bell ringers will join with others around the country in ringing their church bells to commemorate the moment the treaty was signed. On Saturday 9th May we want to celebrate with a street party in Warwick Road. The road will be closed to traffic around the clock tower to Barrow Road, tables and chairs will be provided and everyone is welcome to join us with their own food or food bought from local traders. We hope people will join in the feeling of 40’s celebration and dress up in period clothes. There will be free activities run by local community groups, music, theatre, film and photos to look at and prizes for taking part.
We know that Kenilworth had street parties 75 years ago. If you were here then, or if you are in contact with someone who was, please get in touch with Cllr Kate Dickson or Ms Maggie Field, Town Clerk. Look out for the posters around town with details and visit KenilworthWeb.co.uk for more information. #VE75KENILWORTH
