The Worthies

The 2019 Worthies awards are well underway with the voting for the hotly contested categories in full swing.

What are they?

The concept of an awards ceremony to recognise the people who put the ‘worth’ into Kenilworth was suggested by Seánna Holland, Chair of Kenilworth Chamber of Trade, back in 2016. In her role as Vice Chair at the time, Seánna was all too aware of external companies setting up exclusive awards ceremonies across the local towns and she felt that creating an event with a local feel and accessible to all would be a great initiative for the Chamber of Trade. The Chamber is run by a committee of volunteers who all donate their time into supporting the businesses in the town.

The format has remained the same with the nominations open to anyone within the relevant categories and the public nominate those they feel deserve recognition. Then all nominees are put forwards for a public vote via the website www.kenilworthchamber.co.uk. The top 3 in each category then face a panel of Judges who make the final decision and the winners are announced at an awards dinner in May.

We have 2 special awards which are decided by the Chamber of Trade committee – The Kenilworth Worthies Award recognises an unsung hero in the town who goes above and beyond to support the town and The Worthies Young Persons Award in memory of Milan Patel. This award is open to people aged 18 and under. We are looking for someone who has either overcome adversity or a major obstacle in their life, has worked hard to make a positive change within their community, or has led by example to act as a role model to other young people.

Each year we have changed/added to the categories to try and cover as wide a range of businesses as possible with this year’s as follows:

Business Person of the Year
Pub/Bar of the Year
Restaurant/Cafe of the Year
Retailer of the Year
Community and Cultural Group of the Year
Charity/Fundraising Organisation of the Year
Sports Club/Community Fitness Group of the Year
Health and Beauty Business of the Year
Start Up of the Year (less than two years trading)
The Milan Patel Award
The Worthies Award

2019 has received the highest number of nominees ever at 84, nearly double those received last year. The judging takes place at the beginning of April and the finalists will be announced on 23rd May at our awards dinner at The Chesford Grange Hotel.

We are always looking for sponsors for the individual categories or an overall headline sponsor, if this would be of interest please contact Seánna Holland, Chair of Kenilworth Chamber of Trade, by email at: chair@kenilworthchamber.co.uk.
