Help at Hand Project Oct/Nov 2014

Help at Hand Finds A Perfect Match in North Warwickshire It was fate that brought them together, after a failed attempt to meet a man in Water Orton, Jaydene Biddulph was paired with a lady from Coleshill. This is a story about love, but not an ordinary love story, a story of a true friendship forged after Jaydene answered an advert by the Volunteer Centre North Warwickshire for a Help at Hand befriender. Jaydene had seen the advert several times in the local Gazette and cut it out four times. On the fourth time she finally contacted the centre and found out more about becoming a befriender for the Help at Hand project. The Volunteer Centre North Warwickshire’s Help at Hand project matches people in the local community with people who need help the most – sick, elderly or disabled. […]

Frank Continues to Make a Difference Aug/Sept 2014

Frank Beresford is a local Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for the Despard Road and Holmes Drive area of Eastern Green in Coventry, and he recently became a Regional Finalist for the National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Awards 2014. Frank was nominated for the ‘Community Thank You Award’ by local resident Serena Morgan, who explained how Frank has frequently gone above and beyond the ‘call of duty’ since he set up the local Neighbourhood Watch for the area when he retired 15 years ago. At first, he encouraged his neighbours to attend meetings which he would chair, along with Support Officers, Police, Councillors and Wardens. Anti-social behaviour in the area was significantly reduced back then, and this is no longer a problem in the neighbourhood. The nomination went on to explain how Frank’s caring nature and genuine concern for others has really made a difference over the years. Frank called on his next door neighbour one day, where he happened to witness a major heart attack. Thanks to Frank’s intervention and quick thinking the paramedics were able to save this gentleman’s life, and he enjoyed a further 12 years. The gentleman’s family are eternally grateful to Frank. Kenilworth Lions June/July 2014

Kenilworth Lions Furniture Store – A Success Story For thirty years Kenilworth Lions Club has been running its charity furniture store and has progressed from a Lion’s garage to its own extensive premises on Farmer Ward Road in Kenilworth. The Store’s two vans are well known in and around Kenilworth and the store is a very popular venue on a Saturday morning. The principle is simple and is used by many charitable organisations to raise money. Members of the public give unwanted (but good quality) furniture and household goods, including white goods, to the Lions, who collect from the donor’s address free of charge. The items are sold to the public to raise money for good causes, or sometimes given directly to needy families. Over its lifetime the store has raised in excess of £250,000, which has been distributed to local, national and international causes. […]

Air Cadets June/July 2014

Air Cadets RAC up the Hours in the Flight Simulator Three Nuneaton based Air Cadets have just completed the Pre Gliding Scholarship Training Course at the Air Cadet Regional Activity Centre (RAC) at RAF Wyton. The three budding glider pilots, Cpl Ronan Dykes, Cdt Matthew Waudby and Cdt Mohammed Khan, spent a whole day in the state of the art flight simulator room learning how to fly the G109B Vigilant T1 motor glider, without even leaving the ground. The Pre Gliding Scholarship Training Course is designed to take cadets through all the upper air exercises that they’ll face during their Gliding Scholarship, and just like the actual flying, training culminated in each cadet successfully flying a complete solo circuit of the airfield. Allesley Festival July 2014

“Countries of the World” 4th to 13th July 2014 The Allesley Festival is fast approaching and there is already a buzz in the air. This year will mark the 39th Allesley Festival and whilst it now runs for an incredible 10 days, its tradition and ethos is largely unaltered. Events are organised to appeal to the widest spectrum of the community and as long as some events make money, it is not a problem that other events don’t. The main objective of the Festival is still, and always will be, to have fun, break even, and if there is a surplus, to donate it to causes that really need it. Last year the Festival Committee donated £6,900 to various local charities. This year the theme is “Countries of the World” in recognition of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, as there is tremendous scope to display so many diverse cultures. […]
